Introduction to the University of Dundee
When University College, Dundee was founded in the 1880s, its express purpose was "promoting the education of persons of both sexes". Shortly afterwards, it linked up with St Andrews and became Dundee University when the two split in 1967.
To this day, the University of Dundee focuses on opportunities for women. In September 2000, 56% of new students were women. About two-thirds of students come from Scotland and one-tenth from Northern Ireland. It is an institution where students take enjoying themselves seriously, and where the students' union provides excellent services and entertainment. There are a variety of clubs, including one for fantasy role playing, and another which knows how monstrous its members are.
As well as serious newspapers, Dundee is home to DC Thomson, which produces The Beano.
Dundee has a growing reputation academically. Among the courses that have enjoyed particularly high ratings are medicine, cellular and molecular biology, English, psychology and textile design. Dundee's research into cancer and diabetes is world class and its biochemistry department boasts the most quoted researchers in that area.
Dundee itself, located on the River Tay, is an intriguing blend of Victorian buildings, brutalist 60s monsters and high-grade modern architecture, plus a wide range of pubs and clubs. Dundee has made itself cool.
Alumni include Kate Atkinson, whose books have won her many fans, George Robertson, secretary-general of Nato, and Brian Wilson MP, founder of the West Highland Free Press.
