Introduction to the University of Teesside

Founded in the 1920s by shipping magnate Joseph Constantine, the technical college that took his name became Teesside Polytechnic 40 years later. It turned into Teesside University in 1992. With a firm grounding in technical subjects, Teesside transformed its expertise in naval architecture into one for computing and mathematics.

Based on one town centre campus in Middlesborough, Teesside is both a local and a vocational kind of place. In 1997/98, for example, 61% of full-time undergraduates came from within 50 miles to study courses in business and management, health and design. It also offers a wide range of certificates and diplomas. It starts spreading the message about higher education to local people at a young age: the Meteor scheme takes the battle into primary schools. And it keeps working for older people, too: in 1997/98, almost one-third of full-time first years were over the age of 22.

Life in Middlesborough is what you make it: while the city may be dull, the students' union buzzes with activity. Priority is given to accommodation for first years.
