大学概况

雷丁大学坐落在雷丁市区边缘。是一所开放式的大学，绿树环绕，草坪无际。基本上是一个单一校园的大学。主校园面积约300公顷。在雷丁，学生和学校起着很重要的作用。购物十分方便，并且有着出色的铁路和大巴客运服务。M4高速公路在距离学校一公里处沿雷丁直达伦敦市区中心。由M4到达世界排名第一的希思罗国际机场为23公里。乘城际列车到达伦敦市中心只需大约22分钟。学生宿舍基本都设在主校园。

大学设施

象很多老大学一样，雷丁大学校内有各种为学生服务的生活和体育娱乐设施，有数个体育场馆，开展的活动多种多样。各种学生社团和俱乐部有130多个。虽然校内花费并不昂贵，但雷丁市区的餐馆和服务业收费比较贵，主要是由于雷丁居民的平均构成成分较高造成的，这对于喜欢业余活动但囊中羞涩的学生不是好消息。这一点和曼城，伯明翰等地的反差较大。但是社会秩序和治安明显好很多。

学校主图书馆藏书七十万册;各教研室藏书另有三十余万册。年图书(信息)经费投入为平均每个全日制学生￡75。

校内共有5000多台计算机。所有计算机均24小时与图书馆和互连网相连。计算机维护人员每周6天提供技术支持。并随时指导新学生使用这些校内设备。

校园生活

学校有14处学生宿舍区。宿舍分为普通宿舍和包餐宿舍等不同形式。并且有专门为已婚学生提供的宿舍。学生宿舍办公室也协助学生在校外租私房。95%的新生住校;全部学生中有48%住校。有3000个包伙食的宿舍，周租在￡75以上。1700个 可以自己作饭的宿舍，周租￡42以上。宿舍最短租期为一个学期。

各种活动丰富多彩。有现场音乐演出，周末迪斯科和免费的酒吧乐队演出。校内有电影院，每周放映两场。 校内有体育活动中心。校内出售的体育比赛和活动票都为学生打折。

学生服务

有学习指导顾问，海外学生指导员，保健中心有医生，牙医，心理医生等。并有课外辅导员，法律顾问人员，以婚学生服务人员和幼稚园等。

Introduction to the University of Reading

ReadingUniversity gained its independence from Oxford University in 1926, and since then has established a reputation as an outstanding provider of courses in agriculture that encompass all that goes into farming science and production.

Indeed, the university owns 2,000 acres on the nearby Downs that it uses for teaching and researching the subject. In part, this has given the university its reputation for educating hearty, weatherbeaten types who love their dogs, rugger shirts, Land Rovers and mothers in that order. Still, in 1997/98, 17% of full-time first years came from overseas, a number of them attracted by this department's international reputation.

However, Readingalso offers good courses in the environment as well as in the arts and social sciences. Urged on by Roger Williams - a man fascinated by cultural interfaces, such as those that occur in the subject of nuclear technology where science must meet politics - the university is keen to break the barriers that separate the arts from science. To this end, students of the former are encouraged to take a range of modules in the first year. With the Open University, Readinghas developed materials to enable underqualified students to cope with the necessary rigour of a physics degree.

ReadingUniversity has also been augmenting its buildings and facilities. During the 1990's, it spent £60m, and the most recent beneficiaries were the meteorology, management and agriculture departments.

Readingitself is fairly lively and, if you don't like drinking in the town, the students' union lays on a variety of club nights and live acts in its bars and halls. All first years are guaranteed a place in university accommodation. Sports facilities are excellent and there are a growing number of clubs and societies.
