Introduction to the University of Plymouth
Plymouth University is the largest university in the south-west of England, with more than 20,000 students in 1997/98. You will find its campuses spread across Devon at Plymouth , Exeter, Newton-Abbott and Exmouth. Plymouth became a university in 1992. Before then it was Polytechnic South West, which could trace its history back 200 years to the schools of navigation in the city.
Given its proximity to the sea, Plymouth's reputation for marine studies should come as no surprise. Other courses such as engineering, psychology and environmental science have also done well of late.
The university hit the headlines recently when it announced a new course in surf sciences: Dr Malcolm Findlay at the Institute of Marine Studies insists: "This is the first academically rigorous surf science course in the world." Unfortunately, a job as a soul surfer is not on offer through the careers department.
Plymouth is the most diverse and exciting of the places where the university is based, though the others all have their advantages in the form of cream teas, scrumpy and knockout beaches. The students' union is licensed until 2am at the weekend. University accommodation, however, is not guaranteed.
