大学概况

Introduction to the Paisley University

Paisley Technical College was founded in 1897 and became Paisley University in 1992. It is based on three campuses: at Paisley, seven miles from Glasgow; Ayr and Dumfries, close to the border with England.

Paisley has succeeded in its aim to widen access to higher education to mature students and those who do not usually attend university. In 1997/98, slightly more than one third of full-time first years (792 from a total of 2,343) were over the age of 22. In the same year, 89% of full-time first years came from within 50 miles of the university. However, there is also a high drop-out rate. In 1997/98, almost one in five students left Paisley after only one year.

Paisley offers a wide range of vocational courses: about a quarter of the students are taking business and administration courses. The university has strong links with IBM, Zeneca, Marks & Spencers, Volkswagen and British Aerospace, who take Paisley students on year-long placements.

Accommodation is not guaranteed, although the university has over 1,000 beds. Priority is given to first years who live more than 25 miles away from their campus. The students' association runs club nights and film screenings.
