大学简介

Introduction to the University of Loughborough

Loughborough gained its university status in 1966; before that it was a technical institute (founded in 1909), then a college of technology. Well known as it is for courses in engineering and technology, its recent merger with Loughborough College of Art & Design has increased its coverage of arty subjects. Nevertheless, Loughborough's focus remains firmly on the sciences.

And, of course, on sport, which it takes very seriously indeed. So far ahead is Loughborough in the student sporting leagues that its teams have started to compete against amateur and professional clubs instead: there is a yearly contest, for example, against the Amateur Athletics Association of Great Britain. Living here is not all shuttlecocks and science, however. Loughborough's location, near to Nottingham and Leicester means that there is a good choice of nightlife. Life in the latter is particularly interesting at the moment: Lonely Planet comments that although it "has suffered the triple disasters of wartime damage, uninspired post-war development and catastrophic industrial decline..it has reacted to it better than most, reinventing itself as an environmentally progressive, ethnic entrepot of a city that could teach other, bigger cities a thing or two about multiculturalism."

The students' union is vigorous socially: it has a licence until 2am and offers a wide array of nightly entertainment and a large number of societies.

One-time runner, now Hague-grappler and judo man, Sebastian Coe studied here, as did Parlympic gold medallist Tanni Grey and Barry Hines.
