Introduction to the University of Lincoln

Hull School of Art came into existence in 1861. Following a merger with other colleges in 1976, it became Hull College of Higher Education and eventually Humberside Polytechnic. It gained university status in 1992, becoming the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside when it opened a campus in the cathedral city in 1996. Last year, the institute underwent a further name change, and was rebranded as the University of Lincoln.

The university's campuses are split between Hull and Lincoln, and courses, too, differ from place to place. Courses in Hull tend to focus on architecture, design and health and social care, while those in Lincoln take in the social sciences, (criminology, politics, psychology and social anthropology, for example) and law, though a broader blend is planned.

The university reflects its polytechnic, education-for-all background by accepting a large number of students through non-traditional means: in 1997/98, 28% of full-time first years came through this route.

Both Hull and Lincoln have their strengths and weaknesses. Because of Hull University and the size of the city, Hull is perceived as being a better place for nightlife, but Lincoln is developing in this area too.
