Introduction to the Derby University

Derby University traces its roots back to the Lichfield Diocesan Institute for the Training of School Mistresses in the mid-19th century, but before 1992 it was the Derbyshire College of Higher Education, the only such college to be granted university status with the polytechnics. Since becoming a university, the growth of the student population has been large and rapid as has the creation of departments and courses to teach them.

Employability is crucial to the strategy at Derby: careers guidance is deep and useful - with guidance for prospective students included. Business is the largest single academic department and combined courses are very popular. Work placements are encouraged across all subjects.

As well as enhancing employability, Derby focuses on providing education for all: entry requirements are kept low and it attracts large numbers of mature and part-time students. First years are guaranteed accommodation, and it has an active students' union.

The university's main site is found about ten minutes from the centre of this compact, amiable city where there is much to do. It is within easy reach of Sheffield and Stoke, and also the Peak District National Park.

Derby can count late chat show host Russell Harty and Devon Malcolm among its alumni.
