Introduction to the University of Brighton
Brighton became a university in 1992, although its roots lie in the 19th century School of Science and Art.
Brighton is a vibrant place, and this is reflected in the university's successful courses, which include art and design and history of art. However, the creativity, climate and views of the pier do not blind graduates to the realities of life beyond college: in a recent survey, 79% of graduates had found work within six months of leaving.
Brighton offers vocational courses in pharmacology and pharmacy, nursing and building, and there are a high proportion of mature students. In 1997/98, over one-third of first year, full-time undergraduates were over 21. It is an outward looking place, with strong links to Europe and a large number of overseas students - 12% in 1997/98.
But put aside such minor considerations as accommodation and careers, and remember that Brighton is a good time place: it is the home of Mr Zoe Ball, Norman Cook, and of Skint records, whose music grew from the local scene.
Add to this good transport links and alumni who include Harvey Goldsmith, Helen Rollason and Helen Chadwick, and you are drawn to the conclusion that - to paraphrase Quadrophenia - Brighton is real.
