Local people will have the chance to share their first hand experiences of the summer floods when students at the University of Gloucestershire visit the flood-affected areas of Tewkesbury and Gloucester on Wednesday 19 September.

They will collect both photographic and audio evidence illustrating ways in which the flooding was experienced by people in the affected region as they coped with the natural disaster.

The summer floods of 2007 had a huge affect on Gloucestershire and neighbouring counties, with Tewkesbury being the worst hit with 420,000 homes losing water and 1,500 homes damaged.

Charlotte Parker, course leader for social and policy sciences said: “Recent events have been reported in a number of different ways including meteorological explanations, the heroic efforts of the rescue services, the economic consequences for local agriculture, the need for defensive flood barriers and so on.  But the social scientists have hardly begun to document the human dimension of the flooding, it’s effect on families and community life; how it was experienced by children, the elderly, by people unable to get to work or to the shops — and the countless ways in which everyday life was disrupted.”

“It will be extremely valuable for the students to learn about the flood event and gather first-hand accounts on how local communities were affected.

The students will edit their digital stories and present them in groups.  The collected experiences will form an archive that can be used for future research.
The project is part of the ‘Week Zero’ induction week organised for first years, with various events running throughout the week, including trips to Bristol Zoo and Westonburt Arboretum, giving students a chance to meet their personal tutors and get to know other students.
