As thousands of freshers begin university this week, the StudentsUnion at Goldsmiths, University of London is reconsidering the way that its students are welcomed, moving away from traditional alcohol-fuelled student events.

Recognising the changing student demographic at Goldsmiths, the Students?Union is keen to welcome students of all ages and backgrounds, and has been considering how it can create non-alcoholic spaces dedicated to student development. This year sees the transformation of a venue once dedicated to drinking into a student gallery which will showcase the talents of Goldsmiths students to their peers and members of the public. As part of the 慚ade in Goldsmiths?project, the Students?Union抯 慓reenroom?opened this term with an exhibition by recent graduates Gavin Ramsey and Naomi Pearce, organised in conjunction with the Deptford X arts festival, and a rolling programme of exhibitions are planned for the coming year.

Hannah Bullivant, President of the Students?Union at Goldsmiths, comments: 揟he recent exhibition showed just what the union can be for students at Goldsmiths and marks an exciting transition away from the alcohol-centred cheesy disco culture associated with students unions towards a space dedicated to student development, enterprise, and engagement with the local community.?br />
In its effort to include all students, the Students?Union has also compiled a guide of appropriate events and activities aimed at those students who have traditionally opted out of union activity because of its previous association with alcohol-fuelled events. The guide will give details of student meetings, the 慚ade in Goldsmiths?projects, clubs, societies and volunteering opportunities such as the 慖nmates?project, on which students visit and mentor prisoners.
