THE Director of Cardiff Design Festival has been promoting Welsh design on the world stage at Istanbul Design Week.

Olwen Moseley, who is also Director of Enterprise at UWIC’s Cardiff School of Art and Design, was invited to talk about the profile of design in Wales, and spoke to design festival organisers and business representatives from around the globe.

The Design Week brought together experts from New York, Berlin, Milan and Paris, as well as key players in Turkey’s growing design community and students from Istanbul’s leading universities. There were also representatives from company design giants Volvo, Ikea, Indesit, Peugeot and Braun.

Olwen said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to promote the talent we have locally and how, through the Cardiff Design Festival, we are celebrating and promoting designers from all sectors, including graphics, furniture, new media and product design. It was also good to hear how other festivals are run, so that we can bring back the best of their ideas to continue to develop the Cardiff Design Festival.  Our aim is for as many from the design community, business and the general public to get involved next year.”

The next Cardiff Design Festival takes place in October 2008 and the organisers are delighted to be hosting the Design Management Europe Award (DME Award) at the Wales Millennium Centre and the International Design Conference which will reinforce the city’s place on the international design map.

An event to promote the Festival 08 will take place on October 17 2007 when the leading and controversial design critic Stephen Bayley gives a talk ‘Why I hate the designer chair’ at UWIC’s Llandaff Campus.  This event is open to everyone but as places are limited, tickets need to be booked in advance through info@cardiffdesignfestival.org.
