Congratulations to Derek Chan (Coll, 2002 – 07) and Freddie Manners (Coll), members of the UK Olympiad Team, who were awarded medals at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Moscow. Freddie was placed 53rd in the world and awarded a silver medal, whilst Derek, placed 91st, earned a bronze medal.
The other UK team members were also awarded medals. Matthew Cliffe from The Latymer School, won a silver medal, (placed 50th in the world) and Jaroslav Zak from Caterham School, gained a bronze medal (placed 143rd in the world).
Dr Charles McCaw, Head of Chemistry, and Head Mentor to the UK Team, reported that the five-hour theory and practical tests were acknowledged to be the most severe in the history of the Chemistry Olympiad. The top mark in the world, normally in the high 90s, was 76%.
