Royal Holloway opens state-of-the-art halls of residence
Royal Holloway, University of London is celebrating the opening of three new halls of residence: Butler, Tuke and Williamson. The development replaces three previous halls - Athlone, Cameron and the former Williamson House. The new development is named after former Principals of the College and is the result of a £21 million investment in campus accommodation at its 135-acre site in Egham, Surrey.
Similar to Gowar and Wedderburn halls completed in 2004, the accommodation is designed with environmentally-friendly features. It boasts ‘living’ sedum roofs which provide thermal and sound insulation benefits, retain rain water and significantly reduce drainage requirements. With 466 en-suite rooms fitted to high standards, the accommodation is self-catered and all rooms have double beds.
The halls were designed by architects Stride Treglown, who were also responsible for the design of Gowar and Wedderburn and the award-winning 400-seat lecture theatre and conference facilities, the Windsor Building.
Surrounding the recently refurbished dining facilities and guest accommodation at The Hub, the new buildings provide a ‘student village’ atmosphere for the thriving multi-national student community at Royal Holloway.
Professor Andrew Wathey, Senior Vice Principal, said “This development is a pointer to the vibrancy of our future. It is a significant investment by the College that will enable even more of our students to benefit from Royal Holloway’s unique campus environment; this is first-class accommodation that will be the envy of their peers at other universities.”
