Graduates from the Edinburgh College of Domestic Science are to hold a 40 th reunion which brings together ladies who began their studies at the Edinburgh institution in 1967.

The ladies joined the former institution, fondly known as Atholl Crescent, (now Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh) to begin their training in Domestic Science.

The reunion, which will reunite former teachers of domestic science or home economics, will take place at Queen Margaret University’s Corstorphine campus on 23 June.

Joyce Beveridge, the reunion coordinator, said: “We’ve spent over a year tracking down graduates of this course and we have approximately 50 individuals who are coming from as far a field as Jamaica to attend the reunion. Some of us have not seen each other for 40 years!

“Even though, for many, 1967 was the summer of love and hippies, we as students of the Edinburgh College of Domestic Science, were about to embark on a strict regime which prevailed within the institution at the time. It was very different from student life today. There was a strict dress code and trousers were not acceptable attire for lectures. A register was taken every day and we had to be back in halls for 10.30pm!

”Even though the training was very disciplined lasting friendships were made. It will be fascinating to hear about the careers that people have had whilst also reminiscing about our student days.”

Joyce explained: “These graduates were the first to experience life at the new campus as the institution moved from its base at Atholl Crescent to Corstorphine. This will be the last opportunity for the graduates to visit Corstorphine before the university relocates to its new purpose-built campus at Craighall, Musselburgh.”
