Explaining the clinical behaviour of rituximab in CLL (LRF)

Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) are effective treatments for a number of cancers representing one of the most exciting developments in therapeutics in recent

times. The Cancer Sciences Division in Southampton has an excellent record in basic and translational immunology including the clinical development of mAb,

publishing numerous high impact papers.

Rituximab, a monoclonal antibody targeting B cells, is now established in the treatment of a variety of malignancies and autoimmune disorders. As such, it

represents the top selling cancer drug in the US worth in excess of 5 billion dollars per annum. Rituximab has transformed the treatment of patients with Non

Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and become an established part of standard therapies. Despite this undoubted success certain malignancies such as chronic lymphocytic

leukaemia (CLL), the most common form of leukemia, respond less well.

You will have a PhD in biological sciences and will join an innovative project aimed at determining the reasons why CLL cells are less sensitive to rituximab

and attempting to overcome this resistance. The work will employ a wide range of novel and unique reagents developed in Southampton and use both pre-clinical

models and human clinical material. Your work will have important implications for antibody therapy in general and it is anticipated that it will have a

direct impact on the clinical application of current and future antibody treatments.

The position is fixed term for three years and will be full-time, working with a team of researchers under Dr Mark Cragg, Dr Stephen Beers and Professor

Martin Glennie in the Cancer Sciences Division based at the Southampton General Hospital.
