Sex attacks at University of Sussex campus in Falmer
Security has been stepped up at the University of Sussex after two women were sexually assaulted in a week.
In the early hours of Tuesday, a 20-year-old was pushed to the ground by a man who attacked her as she walked through the Falmer campus.
Six days previously, at about 05:15 GMT on Wednesday, a woman was sexually assaulted at knifepoint.
Sussex Police said they did not believe the two incidents were linked but warned students to take extra care.
Free security alarms
Det Insp Ian Still said: "The investigation into the reported sexual assault in the early hours of this morning is in its early stages and the circumstances are still being established.
"I would encourage anyone who is walking alone on the campus at night to be vigilant and aware and use the services offered by the university if you are worried.
"Although there are similarities with the both incidents, at this stage we do not believe they are linked."
The university said it had increased the number of security staff on patrol at night and personal alarms were available free of charge from the reception.
Second and third year students were also being briefed to offer support to younger students, it said.
The university's vice-chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing, said: "We want to help all students feel secure as they live and study here throughout the year."
