turn v&.n. 钢;lawyer’s office律师事务所;years ago几年前;work at a bank在银行工作;salary (n.) 。。的钱

Part II:

1:I was having dinner at a restaurant when Tony Steele came in.(when引导出一个时间点的概念,在这个时间点上,另外一个人以及与这个人相关的另外一个动作正在发生着,所以,用过去进行时)

示例2:While he was eating, I asked him to lend me 20 pounds.(while引出的是一个时间段的概念,在这个时间段里,一个人正处于做着某事的过程中,同时,另外一个人以及与这个人相关的另外一个动作发生了)

2.…, but…

1:Tony worked in a lawyer’s office years ago, but he is now working at a bank.

示例2:He gets a good salary, but he always borrows money from his friends.

Death(死) Is Better Than Living

Aware of(意识到) the danger(危险), two mercenaries(惟利是图的人) went panning(淘洗) for gold in the sacred(神圣的) river of the ancient Lawandi. Unfortunately, the local natives(本地人) discovered(发现) what they were doing and capturing(捕获) them and brought them before the chief(酋长).

The tribal(部落的) leader was an unmerciful(毫不仁慈的) man. "For what you did, "he declared(宣告), "you must pay(付出代价). You must choose between death or bunjee." The two mercenaries looked at each other. "I don't know what bunjee is, but it's got to be better than death." One of the mercenaries said, "Then I choose bunjee!"

Nodding(点头表示准许), the chief gestured(打手势) and two of his warriors(武士) came over(走上前), grabbing(抓住) the prisoner(俘虏) by each arm. Digging(挖) a deep hole and burying him to the chin(下巴) in the sand, they poured(倒) honey(蜂蜜) over his head and for a full day watched with delight(快乐) as ants(蚂蚁) swarmed(涌来) all around the poor fellow(伙计,人). When the sun set and his punishment was ended, the mercenary was nearly insane(疯了的,精神错乱的). Dug up and released(释放), he staggered(蹒跚着,跌跌撞撞) from the village, babbling(乱讲,乱说) madly.

Having watched his partner suffer(受罪), the other mercenary realized he could never endure(忍受) such suffering(罪,煎熬) and told the chief he preferred to be put to death.

The chief motioned to(向。。。示意) his warriors and when the mercenary was firmly(牢牢地) in their grasp(抓住), the tribal leader smiled and said: "Death by bunjee!"
