(Course Introduction):
During a thirty hour course on writing, students will learn how to improve their writing skills. They will develop strategies for ongoing improvements in vocabulary and other essential elements of the writing process. Being able to write well will eventually improve the students’ chances at promotions, and provide better job satisfaction. The aim of the class is to improve what the students write, so that they are able to make the right impression on the reader. In order to do so, the students will learn the following: strategies for improving vocabulary, strategies for improving the mechanics of writing, and tips on how to allow for ongoing self-improvement.
In addition to general strategies, we will learn how to succeed at business writing. Examples of business writing that will be covered by the course will include: resumes, cover letters, memos, proposals, reports, letters and emails. These are subjects that every individual needs both at home and at work.
The emphasis of the course will be on the essay as a powerful tool. We will learn how it can help us get our message across or stop us from achieving success. The lessons will be both general and personal. However, the aim of the course will be to find both general ways of improving each student’s writing, as well as, specific solutions for each student.
Students who take this course will learn English through the themes of Marketing and Management. They will be listening to musical lyrics, radio commercials and discussing business ideas. Students will be assigned various TV business shows to watch and report on to the class. What we will stress here is comprehension and reporting. . Students will learn how to pick out main points of the topic being lectured about and why little diagrams are important to keep facts clear for quick review.
Business magazines such as Marketing Magazine, Canadian Jeweller Magazine and Style Magazine will be introduced to Students. Articles ranging from editorials, business and sports will also be studied. Because it is important to have a proper grasp of English grammar in the business world, part of each lesson will be spent on grammatical concepts such as sentence structure, clauses and adjectives. Students will take part in debates, letter drills, and games to help remember grammar. At the beginning of the course a needs analysis will determine what level of English the class should concentrate on and how to improve.
Students will learn how to write a proper resume for potential employers. They will fashion resumes to answer specific classified ads in the Toronto Star, the Globe & Mail and Marketing Magazine. Students will complete short essays and homework. Each student will make an 8-10 minute presentation with props. Other students will listen and mark. Students will learn how to express arguments and sales pitches with key points.
Through listening, comprehending and writing students will remember what they have heard. If several students are interested in a particular idea or vocabulary to be worked on during the course of study, the teacher will cooperate. Bottom Line – Students will learn because the subjects are relevant to their personal goals.
