Introduction to the University of Wales, Lampeter
Formed as St David's College in 1822, Lampeter University may have been dispensing degrees for longer than any institution in England and Wales apart from Oxford and Cambridge. It shows its pedigree by teaching courses like ancient Greek and by eschewing the new-fangled nonsense that is science: all the courses are in the arts and humanities and it leads the field in religious studies. It even boasts a centre for Islamic studies.
The Lampeter experience has much to do with the market town's remoteness: it is 20 miles from the nearest railway station and you may care to do some canine research before your first term, because sheepdog trials are one of the local pursuits in this beautiful part of Cardiganshire.
The students' union is very active in laying on events, but this probably isn't a place for hardcore party animals.
